Breast UltrasoundBreast Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging or scanning, also called sonography, uses high frequency sound waves to examine internal structures in the breast. This is a non-invasive and painless examination and does not involve the use of radiation.

Breast ultrasound is performed by applying a clear gel to the transducer (ultrasound probe) which is moved across the breast. Pictures are recorded which are reviewed with the radiologist. At times, the radiologist may come into the ultrasound suite to review a particular area. The examination usually takes 30 minutes.

Ultrasound is utilized in the breast for a number of reasons:

  • Determine the nature of a palpable mass
  • Determine the nature of a mammographic abnormality
  • Evaluate nipple discharge
  • Dense mammogram screening
  • High risk screening
  • Guidance for needle biopsy or cyst aspiration

Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy or Cyst Aspiration

The radiologist uses ultrasound to locate the area for biopsy and to direct the needle used in collecting breast tissue samples or cyst aspirations. This procedure is done comfortably in the ultrasound suite, usually in less than 10 minutes.
